After a number of 100km sportives, all featuring a lot of climbing, Jerry decided it was time for a challenge;

“I lost one of my Welsh sisters to cancer this year, and in her memory (and to raise some money for the charities that helped her) I intend to ride the Dragon Ride for a 3rd consecutive time. But instead of the Gran Fondo distance, I have entered The Devil Ride on 9th June 2019. 305km and 4,829m climbing. My sister fought cancer for 3 years, so a 3rd ride and 300km works perfectly!!” So.... The goal is to come out stronger in 2019 to find another 70km and 1,200m of climbing!!!

Liv put her thinking cap on and together they came up with a plan to get Jerry to the Dragon Devil startline stronger and fitter than ever before. Concerned about the increased volume of training she envisaged, Liv wanted to make strength and conditioning a key part of Jerry’s programme. Particulaly as spinal surgery the previous year, to remove a tumour, left him with 3 damaged vertebrae in his back.

With the plan in place, Jerry followed it to the letter, relishing (or at least, putting up with!) the tough wattbike sessions, repeated FTPs, hill reps and endless strength and conditioning workouts. After a few early season sportives of increasing distance Jerry began to hit his stride; the power was getting high, the hill reps getting faster, the recovery quicker. In June the big day arrived and it was no surprise to Liv that Jerry smashed it.
